The phrase Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) applies to all
approaches to health care that lie outside the realm of conventional medicine, in the
United States.
Conventional medicine refers to medicine practiced by licensed physicians and
other allied health professionals. Complementary or Integrated Medicine
is used in combination with conventional medicine, while Alternative Medicine
is used to replace it.
The
safety and effectiveness of Complementary therapies have been researched by Western
Medicine. Evidence suggests such therapies actually enrich conventional treatment.
Although those that fall under Alternative Medicine have not yet been inducted by our
medical community, does not mean that they are ineffective or unsafe. It simply
means that they have not yet been accepted by medical professions mostly due to the lack
of research. At one point, Chiropractic services fell under the category of
Alternative Medicine. It's practitioners were not only ridiculed but also
imprisoned. Today, these same services are widely accepted throughout the United
States and covered by many insurance companies.
All CAM should be discussed with a primary care physician before being administered.
